Physio's advices

Ice therapy

After any fall or slip we notice pain and swelling, which are part of our body’s natural inflammatory response to any soft tissue injury (Ligaments, tendons) along with these signs we experience redness and heat in the inflamed area. So, Pain, Swelling, Heat and Redness are the four cardinal signs of inflammation. Many of us have heard that ice is kept over the injured area but only some knew keeping ice is a treatment ,it is  called as “CRYOTHERAPY.

Keeping ice on injured part reduces the heat , improves the local  circulation and thereby reduces pain and swelling ,so icing is a vital in any recent soft tissue injury.

Steps of icing therapy:-

Step 1 :-
Wrap the ice cubes in a soft cloth or use frozen water packets.
Step 2:-
Gently stroke the wrapped ice cubes on the injured area, please don’t put pressure on the icing part ,it may aggravate the pain.
Step 3:-
Do not keep the ice cubes stationary ,it may lead to ice burns , and continue stroking for about 15 to 20 mins (below 15 mins ice therapy is ineffective)
Step 4:-
keep the affected area or joint in the elevated position.
Icing can be done one hour once; there is no harm in repeating this technique.
After icing therapy there will be a considerable amount of pain relief, consult Orthopedician or Physiotherapist for further evaluation and treatment.

Caution:-
1.Don’t Massage or  do hot water fermentationjust after a injury.
2.Don’t shiver or briskly move the affected joints.
3.Don’t self medicate or use any sort of splints ,crepe bandage  .
4. Don’t delay to consult the Doctor.
